MESSENGERS AND TEACHERS

A messenger is someone who delivers a message, and a teacher is someone who explains what the message means. Anyone can be a messenger, but only those who are spiritually gifted can be teachers. Note: “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.” (1 Cor. 12:27-28)

MESSENGERS

Anyone can be a messenger. Samuel, for example, was only a little boy and yet God gave him a message to deliver to Eli the priest. “And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’” (1 Sam. 3:11-14)

The Scriptures tell us that Samuel faithfully delivered God’s message. “Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” Samuel answered, “Here I am.” “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.” So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.” (1 Sam. 3:15-18)

  • A faithful messenger does not add to or subtract from God’s message:
  • “Do note add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.” (Deut. 4:2)
  • “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.” (Rev. 22:18-19)
  • “If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God.” (1 Pet. 4:11)

EXAMPLES OF FAITHFUL MESSENGERS

The Bible is filled with examples of messengers who were faithful:

  • A Benjamite came from the battle line and brought a message to Eli. Faithfully delivering that message caused Eli’s death: “Eli asked, “What happened, my son?” The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led Israel forty years.” (1 Sam. 4:16-18)
  • Ahamaaz, son of Zadok, brought a message to David about the battle with his son Absalom. “Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!” He bowed down before the king with his face to the ground and said, “Praise be to the Lord your God! He has delivered up those who lifted their hands against my lord the king.” The king asked, “Is the young man Absalom safe?”Ahimaaz answered, “I saw great confusion just as Joab was about to send the king’s servant and me, your servant, but I don’t know what it was.” (2 Sam. 18:28-29). Please note that Ahimaaz did not add or subtract from his message. He only reported what he knew! “The king said, “Stand aside and wait here.” So he stepped aside and stood there. Then the Cushite arrived and said, “My lord the king, hear the good news! The Lord has vindicated you today by delivering you from the hand of all who rose up against you.” The king asked the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom safe?” The Cushite replied, “May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up to harm you be like that young man.” The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!” (2 Sam. 18:30-33)
  • When Samaria was under siege they experiencing a great famine. Four lepers, however, went into the enemy camp and found it deserted and filled with food and treasures. They ate and drank all they wanted and carried away silver, gold, and clothes and hid them. Then they reported this good news to the gate keepers of Samaria. After investigating their claims the message of the lepers was found to be true and the famine in Samaria was over. Even though the message of the lepers seemed too good to be true, investigation proved that it was true just the same (See 2 Kings 7).
  • “When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.” (Mk. 16:9-11) Even though this message also seemed too good to be true, investigation proved that it was true just the same!
  • We are to not to treat prophetic messages with contempt. Note: “Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good and avoid every kind of evil.” (I Thess. 5:19-22) I am told that the word “test” is used for the assaying of metals. If you truly have gold for sale you are happy to have it tested!
  • When we have tested a message and found it to be from God we can be bold in delivering that message! We can write it in such bold letters that those who run can read it (Hab. 2:2)! When God gives us the message we need to be faithful to God and deliver it!
  • When we test a message and find that it is not true it must be avoided!

TEACHERS

When Israel came out of Babylonian captivity Ezra assembled the people and read them the Law from daybreak until noon, and the people listened attentively (Neh. 8:3). Then “The Levites— Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah,

Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. (Neh. 8:7-8)

It is here that we must be cautious! It is easy to deliver the message of God, but it is not always easy to “make clear” and “give the meaning” of that message. This is why the Holy Spirit has gifted some members of the Body to be teachers!

When Moses sent out 12 spies to explore the land of Canaan they all saw the same thing. They all had the same facts! Ten of the twelve spies, however, “interpreted” those facts in the wrong way! God had commanded the people to conquer Canaan “But the men who had gone up with him said,

‘We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.’ And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” (Nu. 13:31-33)

Only two of the twelve spies, Caleb and Joshua, interpreted the facts correctly! As it so often happens, the majority were wrong! The false teaching of the “majority” caused all the Israelites to grumble against Moses and Aaron and even talk about stoning them. As a result “The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say: In this wilderness your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. But as for you, your bodies will fall in this wilderness. Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.” (Nu. 14:26-35)

As for the false teachers: “these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the Lord. Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.” (Nu. 14:37-38)

NOT MANY SHOULD BE TEACHERS

James, the brother of our Lord, was inspired to write: “Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers. Because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly” (Ja. 3:1).

Everybody can be a “messenger” but “not many of you should presume to be teachers”! If God gives you a message to deliver it is a simple thing for you to do it! The teacher, however, dares to enter into the mind of God and explain what God meant by what he said. Only gifted people should do this!

James uses several examples to illustrate the influence of teachers. The small bits the mouth of a horse can control a very large animal. A small rudder can steer a great ship. Even a tiny spark can set an entire forest on fire. Teachers have influence! Without the gifting of God teachers can spread information that does “not come from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For if you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” (Ja. 3:16). Those who have been called by God to teach, however, have wisdom that comes from above. “The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.” (Ja. 3:17-18)

JESUS HAD STRONG REBUKE FOR BAD TEACHERS

Consider these warnings to teachers from Matthew chapter 23. Jesus said:

  • “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.” (Matt. 23:2-4)
  • “they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others. “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Matt. 23:7-12)
  • “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.” (Matt. 23:13)
  • “Woe to you teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You devour widow’s houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Therefore you will be punished more severely.” (Matt. 23:14)
  • “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.” (Matt. 23:15)
  • “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? (Matt. 23:16-17)
  • “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—

justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.” (Matt. 23:23-24)

  • “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.” (Matt. 23:25-26)
  • “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” (Matt. 23:27-28)
  • “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started! “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” (Matt. 23:29-33)
  • When it was published in 2001, the World Christian Encyclopedia counted 33,830 denominations worldwide. Jesus, as you know, prayed that all believers would be “one,” just as He and the Father are “one” (Jn. 17:20-21).
  • We are to “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” (Eph. 4:3-6) Sadly, many, if not most, of the divisions in the Body of Christ are caused by teachers.
  • You can see why James warned: “Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers. Because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly”

THE POWER OF PERSONAL TESTIMONY

Not everyone should be a “teacher” but every Christian should be willing to share their “personal testimony”. Personal testimony has an important part to play in overcoming Satan. Please consider: “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” (Rev. 12:11)

JUST THINK! YOU ARE THE WORLD’S GREATEST AUTHORITY ON WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU! THEREFORE, YOU CAN GIVE YOUR TESTIMONY WITH BOLDNESS AND CONFIDENCE!

  • The Ten Commandments are repeatedly called “The Testimony”. (Ex. 16:34; 25:16, 21; 25:22; 26:33; 27:21; 30:6, 26, 36; 31:7, 18; Etc. Perhaps one reason they are called “The Testimony” is that no one could look inside the ark and see them. When the men of Beth Shemesh looked into the ark they died (1 Sam. 6:19). The only way you could know the Ten Commandments was by testimony!
  • When you become a Christian God dwells in your heart and your body becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19). Christ dwells in your heart by faith (Eph. 3:17). God writes his new

covenant in your heart and mind (Heb. 8:7-13). No man, however, knows the things of a man except the spirit of a man within him (1 Cor. 2:11). The only way others can know what God has done within you is by testimony!

  • Jesus told his disciples: “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.” (Jn. 15:26-27)
  • “With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and much grace was upon them.” (Acts 4:33)
  • Stephen gave his testimony before he was stoned to death. As he was dying he said: “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God” (Acts 7:56). Saul of Tarsus heard this testimony and it undoubtedly played an important part is his conversion!
  • Paul’s personal testimony is found 3 times in the book of Acts (Chapters 9, 22, and 26). He undoubtedly repeated his personal testimony hundreds of times.
  • The Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well gave her testimony about Jesus and “Many of the Samaritans in that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, ‘He told me everything I ever did.’” (Jn. 4:39)
  • In John 9 is the story of a man born blind who was healed by Jesus. Everyone seemed to have opinions about this man. The Scriptures record the opinions of the disciples, his neighbors, the Pharisees, and his parents. No one, however, could speak with authority like the man himself. Here is his “testimony” - “One thing I do know. I was blind and now I see!” (Jn. 9:25)
  • Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done this not according to worldly wisdom but according to God’s grace.” (2 Cor. 1:12)
  • Just before he died, Paul wrote to Timothy: “Do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner.” (2 Tim. 1:8)
  • “Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 Jn. 5:10-12)

THE GOAL OF CHRISTIAN TEACHING IS LOVE

“As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.” (1 Tim. 1:3-7) Apparently teachers who do not promote love do not know what they are talking about!

EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE HUMBLE

Jesus told the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector for the sake of those who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down upon others. The Pharisee was proud and bragged on himself. The tax collector, however, was so humble that he would not even look up into heaven. The tax collector went home justified while the Pharisee did not. Jesus concluded “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Lk. 18:9-14)

Teachers are in special need of humility for to be successful they need the help of God. When the blind lead the blind both fall into the ditch. Remember! The Scriptures are inspired but our interpretations of the Scriptures are not. Here is an example of dogmatic teachers who were wrong in their interpretation of the Scriptures.

For many centuries scientists and Christian scholars all believed that the earth did not move and that the heavens revolved around it. Several Scriptures were thought to teach this, such as Psalm 93:1: “The earth is firmly established, it cannot be moved.” And Psalm 104:5: “He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.” Etc. Further, considering the earth as the center of the universe was also accepted by the scientific world. Aristotle believed this and he lived over 300 years before Christ. Ptolemy, the famous Greek astronomer, also believed this. He lived in Alexandria and produced a model with the earth at the center of the universe around A.D. 130.

In 1543, however, a Polish astronomer named Nicolaus Copernicus dared to differ. He wrote a scientific paper On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres proving that the sun was the center of our solar system and the earth revolved around it. The Catholic Church considered this as heresy and so did leaders of the Protestant Reformation like Luther and Calvin. Sadly, Galileo was tried as a heretic for believing that the earth revolved around the sun and spent the final years of his life under house arrest. Teachers of the Bible need to be humble!

Paul told Timothy: “Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” (2 Tim. 2:23-26)

We must emphasize that the Bible is never wrong, but teachers are often wrong! Job said that God “suspends the earth over nothing.” (Job 26:7). This, however, does not contradict the Psalmist who said the earth had foundations. In fact, God himself asked Job “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations?” (Job 38:4) When we understand the Scriptures properly they will not be in conflict with science! That’s one reason why teachers need to remain humble for humble people will be exalted by God.

HAMAAN’S PRIDE LED TO HIS DESTRUCTION

The Scriptures warn: “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Prov. 16:18) Hamaan was a proud and wicked man whose story is found in the book of Esther. Here is a brief summary of his story:

  • King Xerxes honored Hamaan and commanded everyone to kneel down and pay him honor (Esther 3:1-2).
  • Mordecai, the Jew, refused to kneel before Hamaan (Esther 1:2).
  • Hamaan was an Agagite. This means he was a descendant of Agag who was killed by the Jews (1 Sam. 15:33).
  • Hamaan therefore hated the Jews and gave the king 10,000 talents of silver to kill all the Jews in his kingdom (Esther 3:9).
  • The king’s wife, Esther, was a Jew. She had been raised by Mordecai whom Hamaan hated. Hamaan, however, did not know that Esther was a Jew.
  • Facing death because of Hamaan’s wicked decree, Esther and her maids fasted and prayed for three days. Then Esther risked her life by approaching the king without being invited (Esther 4:12-5:3).
  • The king welcomed her and offered her anything she wanted up to half of his kingdom (Esther 5:3).
  • Esther asked that the king and Hamaan come to a special banquet she prepared for them (Esther 5:4).
  • Esther’s prayers were being answered. The night before the banquet the king could not sleep. He asked for the chronicles that recorded the history of his reign be read to him (Esther 6:1).
  • It was found in these chronicles that Mordecai, the Jew, had saved the king’s life but had never been honored (Esther 6:2-3). The king therefore decided to honor Mordecai!
  • Hamaan came to see the king wanting to get permission to hang Mordecai. He did not know that he was the very man the king wanted to honor (Esther 6:4).
  • The king asked Hamaan: “What should be done for the man the king delights to honor?” (Esther 6:6).
  • The proud and egotistical Hamaan wrongly assumed that he was the man the king wanted to honor. Hamaan therefore recommended an elaborate royal tribute for that man whom the king wanted to honor (Esther 6:6-9).
  • Then, to the amazement and shock of wicked Hamaan, the king ordered him to do everything he had recommended for Mordecai the Jew! (Esther 6:10-11).
  • As a result, Mordecai was honored, Esther and all the Jews were saved, and wicked Hamaan was hanged on his own gallows.
  • The deliverance of the Jews on this occasion is celebrated to this very day in the Feast of Purim (Esther 9:18-28).
  • Hamaan was a powerful man who knew many things, but there were obviously some things he did not know. He should have been more humble!
  • The same is true of us! There are also many things we do not know an before we dogmatically condemn someone with whom we differ, we should remember Hamaan and try to be more humble!

WHAT DO YOU SAY?

The Auca Indians were a small tribe in the jungles of Eastern Ecuador. The word “auca” is a derogatory term meaning “naked” or “savage”. They call themselves “Huaorani,” which means “The People”. Their territory was about 20,000 square kilometers between the Napo and Curraray Rivers. Their small population of about 600 was divided into three mutually hostile groups – Geketaidi, the Baïidi, and the Wepeidi. Some considered them the most violent tribe on earth. They died from attacks by their enemies, dangers in the jungle, and disease, but 60% of the deaths in the tribe came when they killed one another. Their biggest danger came not from outsiders but from members of their own tribe! In 1956 they were on the verge of extinction when American missionaries instituted “Operation Auca” to try and save them. Those missionaries involved in this heroic effort were Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian. The Huaoranis speared all five missionaries to death on January 8, 1956.

In the 350 years that outsiders knew about this tribe they never had a king, chief, counsel, or any form of government. Every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Consequently, evangelism was accomplished by an unusual strategy. If you dared to command a Huaorani to do something, he might kill you to prove that no one could tell him to do anything! So the evangelist would simply open the Bible and say: “Here is what the Man Maker says, what do you say?” Using this tactic many Huaoranis were not offended and came to Christ.

Christianity Today reported that by January, 2006, the Huaorani population had grown to approximately 2,000 and that 25% – 40% believed in Christ! Many books and articles have been written about this story. The movie, End of the Spear, also tells the story in graphic detail of how those five brave martyrs brought the gospel to this violent tribe.

If you are not a teacher, you can still win people to Christ. You don’t have to explain the Bible, you just have to present it! When you present people with the word of God the Scriptures themselves bring those people to Christ. You can simply say like those who evangelized the Huaoranis: “Here is what God says, what do you say?”

LIFE COMES FROM SEEDS

Life comes from seeds. Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, came by night to see Jesus. This story is recorded in John 3:1-21. It is from this encounter that we learn about being “born again”. The concept is both simple and profound. Nicodemus had physical life because his earthly father planted a physical seed in the womb of his earthly mother. His physical body was made of flesh and blood. And therefore could not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Cor. 15:40). Nicodemus died and his earthly body has long since returned to dust. Flesh and blood are temporal and are of no value in an eternal kingdom. Nicodemus needed to be “born again” with a spiritual seed to enter into a spiritual kingdom. Jesus reminded him of the obvious: “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit.” (Jn. 3:6) Every seed reproduces after it’s own kind! (Gen. 1:12). If Nicodemus wanted spiritual life it had to come from a spiritual seed. That spiritual seed, as you know, is the Word of God! Receiving this “Seed” is what it means to be “born again”. That’s why Peter wrote: “You have been born again,

not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and eternal word of God” (1 Pet. 1:23)

You cannot produce new life. No man can produce new life. Only God can produce life! God, the Creator of all life produces new life by means of seeds. With reference to being “born again” the “seed is the Word of God” (Lk. 8:11). This “Seed” is alive: “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).
