Dearest Grandchild,

Since this subject is in the news, today’s letter will deal with the subject of “Gender Identity”. This phrase was coined by the late Dr. John Money. He held to the irrational view that gender identity did not come from God, but rather from society. He felt that social and environmental cues interacted with a child’s genes and hormones to shape a person’s identity as male or female. In 1965 Dr. Money got the opportunity to test his theory in the laboratory of life. Twin boys, Brian and David Reimer, were born and eight months later both boys were circumcised. Unfortunately, due to a equipment malfunction David’s penis was all but removed.

Dr. Money was consulted and this tragedy presented him the perfect opportunity to prove his theory. Since the boys were identical twins, he could now demonstrate that the way each boy was raised would determine his sexuality. Brian would be raised as a boy, and David as a girl. So they castrated David, fashioned crude female genitalia, and changed his name to Brenda. Dr. Money insisted that under no circumstances was “Brenda” to every be told that “she” had ever been a boy. Dresses and dolls became the order of the day and the great experiment was on.

At age 2, however, things were not going as planned. Brenda angrily tore off “her” dresses, and refused to play with dolls. “She” would beat up her brother and seize his toy cars and guns. In school “she” was teased for “her” masculine gait and behaviors. When “she” complained that “she” felt like a boy, her parents dutifully followed Dr. Money’s advice and told “her” that “she” was merely going through a phase. Meanwhile, Brenda's mother attempted suicide and “her” father lapsed into alcoholism. The neglected twin brother Brian eventually descended into drug use, pretty crime, and ultimately died a suicide.

When Brenda was 14, a local psychiatrist convinced the parents to tell “him” the truth. Later David later said: "Suddenly it all made sense why I felt the way I did. I wasn't some sort of weirdo. I wasn't crazy." So David embarked on the painful process of converting back to his biological sex. A double mastectomy removed the breasts that had grown as a result of estrogen therapy. Multiple operations created an artificial penis and testicles. He also received regular testosterone injections. Yet David was depressed and twice attempted suicide in his early 20s.

David did eventually marry but his dark moods persisted. He was plagued by shaming memories of the frightening annual visits to Dr. Money, who used pictures of naked adults to "reinforce" Brenda's gender identity and who pressed “her” to have further surgery on “ her vagina."

Dr. Money’s “success” with David was used to legitimize the widespread use of infant sex change in cases of hermaphroditism and genital injury. When David learned this he was outraged and agreed to participate with Dr. Milton Diamond in shattering the myth. This study was published in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in March 1997.

David's blighted childhood was never far from his mind. Just before he killed himself he

spoke to his wife about his sexual "inadequacy," and failure to be a true husband. So, on the morning of May 5, 2004, he retrieved a shotgun and sawed off the barrel. Then he drove to a nearby parking lot, raised the gun, pulled the trigger, and proved the true “success” of Dr. John Money’s sexual theory.

Several passages of Scripture forbid men dressing like women, and vice versa (Deut. 22:5; 1 Cor. 11:3 - 10; etc.) The problem of cross dressing goes much deeper than mere clothing. Lucifer was the original rebel who refused to submit to the way God made him, and cross dressers follow his evil example. It seems that Dr. John Money did too!

In John 9 we are told of a man who was born blind. Jesus said that he was born that way so that the work of God might be displayed in his life (Jn. 9:3) I like to think that God made you the way you are so that His might could also be displayed in your life.

If you submit to God’s lordship over your life you will find happiness and contentment, regardless of the hardships you encounter. Even better than that is the promise of eternal reward in heaven.
