Dearest grandchild,

Today’s letter will focus on how to be noticed by God! Women spend a lot of money in order to be noticed by men. In the U.S. women spend on an average of $3,756 each year on cosmetics and $38,838 on clothing. Isaiah rebuked such conduct in ancient Israel and warned of judgment. He wrote: “In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, the earrings and bracelets and veils, the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, the signet rings and nose rings, the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.” (Isaiah 3:18-23)

Men, by comparison, are probably more noticed by women if they merely develop their muscles and make a lot of money!

God, however, measures mankind by a totally different metric. Please note: “For the eyes of the LORD roam throughout the earth to show himself strong for those who are wholeheartedly devoted to him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9) David, the shepherd boy, provides a perfect example! When God decided to replace King Saul He sent Samuel the prophet to anoint one of the sons of Jesse to take his place. When Samuel saw David’s brother, the tall and handsome Eliab, he wrongly assumed that he would be the new king. Then the Lord said to Samuel: “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) David, as you know, was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). God is still diligently looking for hearts that are wholeheartedly devoted to Him!

Yes! “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3) Not one sparrow falls to the ground without His knowledge and even the very hairs of your head are all numbered (Matthew 10:28-30). If you really want to get the attention of God, however, then love Him with all of your heart! The Lord is constantly looking for people like that! “There is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine persons who do not need to repent.” (Luke 15:7) Please consider the following people that were noticed by God! Remember - “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”.

  • “As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” (Luke 21:1-4)
  • When a woman anointed Jesus with perfume worth more than a years’s wages, the disciples of Jesus rebuked her for not giving it to the poor. “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” (Mark 14:6-9)
  • There were many widows in Israel during the days of Elijah when it didn’t rain for 3 ½ years. Elijah, however, was not sent to widows in Israel but to a pagan widow in Zerephath whose heart was fully dedicated to God (Luke 4:25-26).
  • There were many lepers in Israel during the days of the prophet Elisha. But Elisha healed a pagan from Syria named Naaman whose heart was fully committed to God (Luke 4:27).
  • The Virgin Mary was not selected to be the mother of Jesus because of her wealth, beauty, or social standing, but because her heart was fully devoted to God (Luke 1:46-55).
  • THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IF YOU DO NOT LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND! YOU ALSO CAN LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART!

Remember! You were created in the image of God! This means, among other things, that you have free will! You can choose to do anything you want to! Adam and Eve did not have to eat the forbidden fruit, they chose to do so! When Israel entered the Promises Land God gave them a choice between life and death and encouraged them to choose life (Deut. 30:19). Joshua also gave a similar choice to his generation to serve pagan gods or the Lord. Then he added his own choice: “But as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

Athens was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom! Some of the smartest people in the world came to Athens to debate the great issues of life. None of them were serving the One True God! So Paul said: “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead” (Acts 17:30-31). The Bible word for “repent” is “metanoeo” which literally means to change your mind!

So, if up to now, God has been an irrelevant and insignificant part of your life – you can change your mind! You can “repent”! God is a Loving Father, and you can come to him like the Prodical Son came to his father! PTL! WHOEVER COMES TO HIM WILL NOT BE CAST OUT! (John 6:37).
