Dearest grandchild,

The Scriptures remind us that “We are God’s fellow workers” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Just as your mom and dad loved you and allowed you to help them, God also loves you and wants you to help Him! Since God created the heavens and the earth He could easily have taken care of the Garden of Eden all by Himself. Instead, He put Adam in the Garden “To work it and to take care of it.” (Genesis 2:15) God even introduced Adam to science by permitting him to name all the creatures around him. This branch of science is called “taxonomy”. The point is, throughout all of history God has chosen to allow us to be his “fellow workers.”

The letter to the Corinthians mentions that Paul and Apollos were “God’s fellow workers”. Paul planted the seed, Apollos watered it, and God gave the increase. While it is obvious that God works with men like Paul and Apollos, todays letter will focus on how God also works with women. Even more exciting is that God even uses little girls to help Him!. Since God has blessed us with 12 grand daughters and 12 great grand daughters this letter is especially exciting. I hope and pray that all women and girls will understand that God wants all of you help Him in some special project. Yes! God loves you, knows your name, knows where you live, and wants YOU to be His helper!

  • Here are a few examples from the Bible! Miriam was a little girl born as a slave in Egypt. When the wicked king ordered that all little boy babies be killed God used Miriam to help save the life of her little brother Moses. Scholars believe that she was only 5 years old at the time. The whole family hid the baby for 3 months and when they could hide him no longer, they put him in a basket in the river where the king’s daughter came to bathe. Brave Miriam stood in the distance to watch over him. When the princess found the baby, Miriam courageously ran to her and offered to find a Hebrew woman to take care of him. In this way little Moses was raised by his own mother and learned about the One True God. Moses, as you know, grew up to be the man God used to release the Israelites from slavery. If God used a 5 year old girl to be his “fellow worker”, surely He can also use you! (See Exodus 1 – 2)
  • The King of Aram promoted a man named Naaman to be the commander of his army. Then Naaman got an incurable disease called leprosy. Naaman had captured a young Hebrew girl, however, to be his slave. Let us guess that she was 10 years old. This little girl had the courage to tell her mistress that there was a prophet of the One True God in Samaria who could make him well. It took great courage and faith to do this! When Naaman was healed he said: “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.” (2 Kings 5:15). Even if you are only 10 years old, you can still have the faith and courage to be a “fellow worker” with God.
  • Many believe that the virgin Mary was only about 15 years old when Jesus was born. She was not rich or popular but she loved God and was willing to obey Him. Therefore God chose her to bring the baby Jesus into the world and Mary said: “All generations will call me blessed.” (Luke 2:48) If you are willing, God can also use you too even if you are only 15 years old.
  • Esther was a godly young woman when she became the queen of the most powerful kingdom on earth. Her husband reigned over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush (Esther 1:1). Let us “guess” that she was about 20 at the time. A wicked man named Haman had arranged for a royal decree “To destroy, kill and annihilate all of the Jews – young and old, women and little children – on a single day.” (Esther 3:13) Esther was devout, wise, and brave and God use her to save all of her Jewish brethren. If she had not succeeded Jesus would not have been born! Yes! You can also be God’s “fellow worker” even if you are only 20 years old!
  • God, of course, wants to work with everyone regardless of how old you are. Here are a few examples of older women who were “fellow workers” with God.
  • Deborah was a famous prophetess and Judge who worked with God to deliver the Israelites from a wicked man named Jabin who was king of the Canaanites (Judges 4 – 5).
  • Hannah was a devout follower of the One True God who dedicated her son to the Lord before he was even born. Her son became a famous prophet named Samuel.
  • Ruth was a Moabite who decided to follow the One True God. She told Naomi, her mother in law: “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Ruth became the great grandmother of David!
  • Just before Jesus was crucified a godly woman realized that Jesus was going to die! Apparently none of His disciples understood this yet! She broke a jar of very expensive perfume and anointed Jesus. When some criticized her, Jesus defended her because she had anointed Him for His burial. This godly woman understood something the disciples didn’t even understand! Jesus loved her and wanted her story told wherever the gospel is preached (Mark 14:1-9).
  • Lydia was a wealthy business woman who kept Paul and his company in her home (Acts 16:15)
  • Phoebe was a servant of the church in Cenchrea. She had been a helper of Paul and also many others. Paul told the brethren in Rome to help her in whatever she needed (Romans 16:1).
  • Seven other women who were God’s “fellow workers” are mentioned by name in Romans 16 – Priscilla, Mary, Junias, Tryphena, Tryphosa, Persis, and Julia.
  • When the baby Jesus was taken to the temple to be consecrated, God sent to a prophetess named Anna to Him! “She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:37-38)

Just as your parents loved you and taught you to work for them, Jesus also loves you and wants to teach you how to work for Him! Jesus already has a special job for you to do! Please consider this special invitation from Jesus! “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
