Dearest grandchild,

Today’s letter will be about the importance of children. If you destroy the egg of a bald eagle you are subject to a $5,000 fine and a year in prison. For a second offense the fine could be $10,000 with a two year prison sentence. Note the contrast, however, with children. In 2024 the World Health Organization estimated that 73 million babies are aborted every year and no one seems to care! You will be punished for destroying an eagle egg, but you can kill an unborn baby without fear!

• Please consider these “important” events in history from 1870 – 1889.
• F. W. Wool Worth opened his first five and ten cent store.
• The Czar of Russia (Alexander II) and the President of the U.S. (James A. Garfield) were both assassinated.
• The Panama Canal was begun.
• The Brooklyn Bridge was opened.
• The Statute or Liberty was unveiled.
• At the World’s Fair in Paris the Eiffel Tower was opened and the first motorcar in Paris was displayed.
• Etc.

During this brief period of 19 years 3 little babies were born and nobody seemed to notice or care. Yet these three little babies were destined to dramatically change the world in a very negative way.

• Joe Stalin was born December 21, 1879. Before the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. historians estimate that 20 million people died during Stalin’s regime.
• Benito Mussolini was born July 29,1883. Mussolini was the founder of Fascism and ruled Italy from 1922 – 1943. He was allied with Hitler in W.W. 2. This “world war” resulted in 15 million battle deaths and over 38 million civilian deaths.
• Adolf Hitler was an illegitimate child born April 20, 1889. He became the Chancellor of Germany in 1922 and Fuehrer in 1934. He triggered the European phase of W.W. 2 by attacking Poland on September 1, 1939. In his book Mein Kampf he described his desire to promote a super race and rid the world of human chaff. Murdering 6 million Jews was a part of his plan.

So which is more important, human inventions or human babies? In reality, both are important.! Please consider, however, that the Eiffel tower did not design itself, Gustave Eiffel did. Neither did the automobile design itself, Gottlieb Daimler did. The famous inventors who improve our lives or destroy our lives all began as babies.

Society needs doctors and nurses, farmers and carpenters, teachers and bankers, soldiers and housewives, preachers and scientists, etc. All of these valuable workers began as babies. It should be obvious that humans have greater potential to help mankind than eagles, yet many do not see, understand, or care about humans. In fact, many believe that killing babies is good to avoid over population and starvation. Thomas Malthus expressed this fear in 1798 when world population was only 800 million. His predictions about over population and mass starvation were wrong! Today world population is 8.2 billion and the World Health Organization reports that worldwide adult obesity has doubled since 1990, and obesity among children has quadrupled. Yes some people are facing famine today, but famines have been a reality for all of human history. Remember that the whole Roman world faced famine in the days of Jesus when world population was only 300 million (Acts 11:28).

As you know, Jesus Himself came to earth as a baby. Isaiah predicted his influence and wrote: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7) When the old man Simeon saw the baby Jesus in the temple he took Him in his arms and said: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32) Simeon only saw a little baby but still realized that this “baby” would save the world! God help us to see what Simeon saw!

The National Institute of Health reported another fear in 2010: “One in five of the world’s plant species is threatened with extinction . . .” Many fear that some of these endangered plants may hold the cure to cancer or AIDS. The truth is that a plant doesn’t cure anything without a person. Aspirin, for example, is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. It comes from willow and myrtle plants. The discovery of aspirin stretches back more than 3500 years. Aspirin is still one of the most commonly used drugs in the world. It helps in many ways including the prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. The point is, aspirin would never help anyone unless it was discovered, refined, and marketed by people. Jesus said that a man is more valuable than a sheep (Matthew 12:12). It should also be obvious that a man is better than an eagle or an endangered plant in the jungle!

“O mothers, so weary, discouraged, worn out with the cares of the day, You often grow cross and impatient, complain of the noise and the play:

For the day brings so many vexations, so many things going amiss; But mothers, whatever may vex you, send the children to be with a kiss.

The dear little feet wander often, perhaps from the pathway of right. The dear little hands find new mischief to try you from morning ‘till night;

But think of the desolate mothers who’d give all the world for you bliss, And, as thanks for your infinite blessing, send the children to bed with a kiss.

For someday their noise will not vex you, and the silence will hurt you far more; You will long for their sweet childish voices, for a sweet childish face at the door;

And to press a child’s face to your bosom – you’d give all the world for just this! For the comfort ‘twill bring you in sorrow, send the children to bed with a kiss!”
