Dearest grandchild,

Today’s letter will be about advice from a famous teacher of the Law named Gamaliel. Paul himself, had been a student of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). The Apostles had been warned not to teach in the name of Jesus, but they had instead boldly filled Jerusalem with His teaching (Acts 5:28). The Apostles were on trial before the Sanhedrin when Gamaliel wisely asked that they be put outside for a while. Then he reasoned with the Sanhedrin to “Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” (Acts 5:38-39)

PLEASE DON’T FIGHT AGAINST GOD FOR IT IS A BATTLE YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO LOSE!

  • Here are some facts that the Sanhedrin had to consider:
  • Jesus had been publicly crucified and His grave was secured by the Roman Government.
  • Three days later His tomb was empty and hundreds of people claimed to have seen him alive.
  • Thousands of foreign Jews were in Jerusalem for Pentecost from every nation under heaven.
  • On Pentecost Sunday 3000 of these devout Jews believed in Jesus, repented, and were baptized.
  • Then Peter and John had healed a well known beggar who was crippled from birth.
  • The crippled man was over 40 years old and the fact of his healing could not be hidden.
  • As a result of this healing the number of believers grew to about 5,000 men.
  • Then the apostles were arrested and an angel miraculously delivered them from prison.
  • Then the Apostles continued to publicly preach that Jesus was risen from the dead.
  • Peter and the others fearlessly told the Sanhedrin “We must obey God rather than men.”
  • Revolutionaries like Theudas and Judas of Galilee had failed and their followers scattered.
  • That’s when Gamaliel recommended: “Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
  • THE FACT THAT AFTER 2,000 YEARS THERE ARE MILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS ALL OVER THE WORLD IS STRONG EVIDENCE THAT THIS MOVEMENT IS OF GOD!

The very idea that human beings could successfully fight against God is laughable! In fact the Psalmist wrote: “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.” (Psalms 2:1-5) Please note that this is the very Scripture the Jerusalem church called to mind after Peter and John had been warned to never speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:16-31).

When Solomon built the temple he said: “The heaven of heavens cannot contain you, much less this temple I have built.” (1 Kings 8:27) Solomon knew that God is bigger than the whole universe. How can any rational person conclude that mortal men can defeat an immortal God? Let us suppose, for example, that all the rulers of earth combined their military might and decided to send a hydrogen bomb to the edge of the universe and try and kill God. If somehow we puny earthlings could produced a missile that could travel at the speed of light, it would take 46 billion years for the bomb to

reach its destination. Then, of course, our biggest bomb could not in any way harm God, for God is Spirit! It is patently impossible for a physical weapon to harm, wound, or kill a Spirit!

If you plan an attack on God it is important to remember the reality of angels. As you know God’s angels have supernatural power. For example, God sent a single angel to destroy the army of King Sennacherib. That one angel killed 185,000 soldiers in a single night (Isaiah 37:36). The book of Revelation teaches that there are “Many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.” (Revelation 5:11) No wonder God laughs at the threats of men!

We, however, need to seriously consider what God can do to us. Jesus warned: “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” (Luke 12:4-5)

Solomon said: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10) Yet Paul described diabolical sinners as having “No fear of God before their eyes.” (Romans 3:18) How sad! How very very sad!

PLEASE SON’T FIGHT AGAINST GOD! THIS IS NOT A LAUGHING MATTER!
