Dearest grandchild,

Today’s letter will be about Sir Lionel Alfred Luckhoo (March 2, 1914 – December 12, 1997). Among his many claims to fame, in 1990 he was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s “most successful lawyer.” He maintained a private legal practice from 1940-1985 and defended 245 people accused of murder and every client was acquitted. A few of his clients were temporarily convicted by a jury but later acquitted on appeal. Apparently no other lawyer on earth has been this successful!

Luckhoo was obviously a brilliant man. He was knighted twice by the Queen of England and is the only person to have been the ambassador of two sovereign nations at the same time (Barbados and Guyana). He served as Lord Mayor of Georgetown, Guyana, and also presided as Judge of the Supreme Court of Guyana. He was the head for four trade unions and also served as the President of the Guyana Olympic Association. Lionel received the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1962, and was made a knight bachelor in 1977. He received the KCMG (Knights Commander of St Michael and St George) in 1969. These are just a few of the many honors he earned in his amazing life.

On November 7, 1978, at the age of 64, Luckhoo accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. As you can imagine, this brilliant lawyer did not make this life changing decision without considering the evidence. He found major flaws in other religions but could not disprove the resurrection of Jesus. This, as you know, is the foundation of the Christian faith. Paul wrote: “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” (1 Corinthians 15:14)

After Luckhoo was convinced by the evidence that Jesus actually rose from the dead this fact changed the focus of his life. Now, exalting Christ became both paramount and rational! He spoke all over the world to kings, presidents, parliaments, bar association, and even the United Nations stating: "The bones of Muhammad are in Medina, the bones of Confucius are in Shantung, the cremated bones of Buddha are in Nepal. Thousands pay pilgrimages to worship at their tombs which contain their bones. But in Jerusalem there is a cave cut into the rock. This is the tomb of Jesus. IT IS EMPTY! YES, EMPTY! BECAUSE HE IS RISEN! He died, physically and historically. He arose from the dead, and now sits at the right hand of God."

After years of investigation and study Luckhoo announced: “I have spent more than forty-two years as a defense trial lawyer in many parts of the world. I say unequivocally the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ is so overwhelming that it compels acceptance by proof which leaves absolutely no room for doubt!”

  • The resurrection of Jesus is also proof of our own resurrection!
  • Jesus is the “first fruits” of those who have fallen asleep (1 Cor. 15:20).
  • “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ will all be made alive.” (1 Cor. 15:22)
  • “For a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out – those who have done good will rise to life, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.” (John 5:28-29)
  • “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the
  • clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” (1 Thess. 4:16-18)
  • The resurrection of Jesus not only rationally argues that we also will be raised from the dead, it also is convincing evidence that we will stand before God in Judgment. Paul warned the philosophers on Mars Hill: “In the past God overlooked such ignorance but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

Sadly, some of these arrogant philosophers sneered when they heard of the resurrection. Sadly, some have always sneered when they hear the word of God. Consider, for example, these inspired words from the prophet Ezekiel: “Son of man, your people talk about you in their houses and whisper about you at the doors. They say to each other, ‘Come on, let’s go hear the prophet tell us what the Lord is saying!’ So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money. You are very entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on an instrument. They hear what you say, but they don’t act on it! But when all these terrible things happen to them—as they certainly will—then they will know a prophet has been among them.” (Ezekiel 33:30-33)

Please do what Sir Lionel Alfred Luckhoo did, and give some serious thought to the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. Please also make preparations for your own resurrection.
