Dearest grandchild,

Today’s letter will deal with Hebrews 10:19-20 KJV: “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.” This passage is revolutionary! Please focus your spiritual and mental energies on these verses for they describe the dramatic difference between the Old Testament and the New. The 33 years Jesus spent “in the flesh” do not represent complete reality but are only a veil. The 33 years covered by the four Gospels are but a tiny window through which we see only a tiny fraction of Jesus. John said it like this: “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written” (Jn. 21:25). Jesus is not only eternal, He is God! “Through him all things were made, and without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:3)

The Jewish tabernacle and temple had a special compartment called the Holy of Holies. This room represented the presence of God and was hidden behind a veil. For centuries nobody could go beyond that veil except the High Priest, and he could only do so on one day in the year with strict limitations. He would naturally enter “beyond the veil” with fear and trepidation for if he made a mistake he died (Lev. 16:13). When Jesus died on the cross, however, that veil was torn in two from the top to the bottom (Matt. 27:51). This made the Holy of Holies accessible to all believers. This is “Good News”! The tearing of the veil is a beautiful symbol revealing that the children of God are now free to enter “boldly” into the presence of God by the blood of Jesus.

A picture, like a veil, is two dimensional. It has length and width, but no depth. You cannot marry a picture. You cannot have children by a picture. A person, by contrast, has three dimensions. We are “spirit, soul, and body” (1 Thess. 5:23). The Jesus of the four gospels is two dimensional. To be “born again” you must go beyond the veil. The bride of Christ is married to a real person and not to a veil! (Eph. 5:22-33; Rev. 21:2; etc.)

Sadly, many only know a two dimensional Jesus. They only know the Jesus of history. They think of Jesus like a Jewish priest thought about the veil. The Jewish priest could describe the veil with accurate detail. He knew that the veil was made of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen. He was familiar with the cherubim that were worked into it by skilled craftsmen (Ex. 26:31). The regular priests, however, had no illusions of personally going beyond that veil. They knew that privilege was reserved for only the High Priest. A similar situation is experienced by Christians today. Many know much about the 33 years Jesus spent in the flesh. Just as the Jewish priest knew much about the veil they can recite stories about what Jesus did 2,000 years ago with remarkable accuracy. The idea of going beyond that veil, however, and encountering Jesus in person may make some of our friends think we have lost our sanity. It is safer to describe the veil than to encounter Christ in person. It is easier to talk about his birth, his miracles, and even his death on the cross, than it is to enjoy a personal encounter with the living Lord. The thought of encountering Jesus in person, however, should not be terrifying! WE SHOULD HAVE BOLDNESS TO ENTER INTO HIS PRESENCE!

The Bible, as you know, is God’s inspired word: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim. 3:16-17 KJV). That divine revelation is complete and no more books of the Bible need to be written. The Bible not

only tells us about Jesus, but it also tells us how we can know him in person. When we do know Jesus we become a “new creation” and there is a sense in which we become living letters from Christ. Paul wrote: “You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts” (2 Cor. 3:2-3).

Personally experiencing Christ is not a peripheral matter but is the very essence of the New Covenant. Please consider: “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (Heb. 8:7-12).

“To know” in the Bible, means to become intimate with so that a new life is produced. For example, “Adam knew his wife and she conceived and bare Cain” (Gen. 4:1 KJV). Thus to “know” Christ is to be “born again”. When you were born the first time you received the DNA or “image” of your earthly father. When you are “born again” you receive the DNA or “image” of your Heavenly Father (1 Cor. 15:47-49). The word translated as “image” in this passage is “eikon” from which we get our English word “Icon”. To “click” on an “icon” opens up something previously hidden. To “click” on Jesus opens up God!

Your intimate experience with Christ will never contradict or add to the Scriptures. It can, however, help you to understand the inspired Scriptures we already have. “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The Spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment” (1 Cor. 2:14-15). Please do not consider a personal encounter with Christ as foolishness!
