LETTERS FROM GRANDPA #274

Dearest grandchild,

Todays letter will deal with the unpleasant subject of abortion. As you know, all that is necessary for evil people to triumph, is for good people to do nothing. We must face reality even when it is unpleasant to do so. On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled that unborn babies are not legal persons. Consequently, with the cooperation of a doctor the baby can be killed even up to the time of birth. In some instances, even after birth. This horrendous decision has resulted in the death of approximately 62 million babies in the United States.

The fact that abortion is "legal," however, does not make it “right”. Students of history know that at one time slavery was legal in the United States. On March 6, 1857, in the landmark Dred Scott decision, the United States Supreme Court ruled that slaves were not legal persons. Slaves could therefore be bought, sold, used, or even killed at the owner’s discretion. Eleven years and a civil war later, the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments to the U. S. Constitution, finally gave to all human beings the legal protection of law.

Similarly, the Nuremberg laws in Germany (Sept. 15, 1935) deprived Jews of citizenship and ultimately of their lives. The fact that Hitler demanded their deaths, however, did not make it legal. After the war American judges rejected “I said so” as a legal basis. These judges therefore considered Germany a criminal state and it’s laws invalid. American judges therefore prosecuted those responsible for the holocaust. How ironic that someday America may be considered a criminal state and American judges therefore liable for prosecution.

Murder and lies do not come from God. Jesus said to the hypocrites of His generation: "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44 NIV)

We now know that the horrendous decision to legalize abortion in 1973 was based upon lies. In 1969, Norma McCorvey was selected like a pawn by lawyers Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee to be the plaintiff in the class action Roe v Wade suit. Norma was a ninth grade drop out who had become a runaway, thief, alcoholic and drug addict. She already had two kids and didn’t want another. To gain sympathy, and increase her chance of getting an abortion, she lied about her pregnancy and claimed it was the result of rape. For many years after Roe v Wade she suffered the agony of knowing she was involved in the murder of little babies. Newsweek Magazine (Aug. 25, 1955) states that "McCorvey would drink herself to sleep . . . only to be haunted by nightmares of live infants being carved up in front of her." She later repented and was baptized (Aug. 8, 1995). She died of heart failure Feb. 18, 2017 at the age of 69. Interestingly, McCorvey never received the abortion she sought.

The companion suit in 1973 was Doe v Bolton. The plaintiff in this suit was another pawn named Sandra Cano. She found herself pregnant and alone. Her husband was in jail and her two children had been taken from her by county welfare workers. ACLU lawyer, Margie Pitts Hames, offered to help. Mrs. Hames, and a few others, dipped into their own pockets to help Sandra pay for an abortion. Remarkably, however, Sandra didn’t want an abortion. World Magazine (Mar. 29, 1997) quotes her as saying: "I didn’t need a baby, | didn’t want the baby. | didn’t want to be pregnant, but |

was not going to take a baby’s life." When she found out her lawyers were going to force her to have an abortion she ran away, refusing to return until she was assured that she wouldn’t have to kill her baby. Her baby, Melissa, was born Nov. 6, 1970 and placed for adoption.

Unfortunately, the truth about Sandra never reached the Supreme Court. Instead lawyer Hames told the court that Sandra sought an abortion at a public hospital but her application was denied. Later, Sandra was supposed to have tried to get her abortion through a private hospital but supposedly failed again because she had no money. The public hospital referred to was the Grady Memorial Hospital. Grady records division wrote: "Grady Health System is unable to locate any records despite spending 32 hours searching under every possible name and variation."

Those who knew Sandra after Roe vs. Wade described her as a "sincere repentant believer." She had wanted to speak out for years but was wary of lawyers and the media. She found it hard to understand how the Supreme Court decision could stand when she knew it was based upon lies. Sadly, Sandra also passed away Sept. 30, 2014. Apparently the pro-abortion lawyers really didn’t care about McCorvey and Cano. They were obviously manipulated, used, and then forgotten.

David knew that God cared about little babies and wrote: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. | praise you because | am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, | know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when | was made in the secret place. When | was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body." (Ps. 139:13-16 NIV) The question is “Do we care?”
