Dearest grandchild,

Today’s letter will deal with the book “Cult City” by Daniel J. Flynn. This book deals with events that took place 40 years ago, and in particular with 10 fateful days in San Francisco. During those 10 fateful days over 900 people died by suicide in Guyana and two prominent San Francisco politicians were assassinated. November 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of these tragedies.

Author, Daniel J. Flynn wrote: “I was a kid when the Johnstown mass suicide took place, and always assumed that Jim Jones was some kind of a fundamentalist Christian. In fact, he and his People’s Temple, were very much the opposite”. This book blows the cover off revisionist historians. Forty years ago things were much like they are now. The Zodiac killers were taunting the cops, the Zebra Murderers were targeting white people, and the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped Patty Heart. Those were the days of “The Summer of Love”, “Haight-Ashbury”, and “Golden Gate Park’s Human Be-In”. That’s when over 900 cult members obeyed their leader and drank Kool Aid laced with cyanide. A few days later Dan White murdered Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone in San Francisco. If you hear someone refer to “drinking the Kool Aid” it probably refers to a mindless obedience like those who committed suicide on the orders of Jim Jones.

Flynn points out that Jim Jones was not a fundamentalist Christian but rather a socialist fanatic. Far from being a fundamentalist Christian, Jones ridiculed the Bible and stomped on it in front of his followers. When Jonestown ran out of toilet paper they used the Bible for toilet paper. Jonestown was communist not Christian. They donned red uniforms, sang the Red Army Chorus “The Internationale”, and studied the Russian language. Even their mass suicide had political ramifications as Jones deemed it “revolutionary suicide”.

One reason to revise the history of Jim Jones was to protect his political allies. Jones was a prominent Democratic in San Francisco. He even had private meetings with Walter Mondale and Rosalynn Carter during the 1976 presidential campaign. Mayor Moscone appointed him chairman of the city’s Housing Commission Authority. Jane Fonda, Huey Newton, Angela Davis and others heaped praise upon him. Willie Brown compared him to Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. This made the revision of his radical views a political necessity. After the Emperor Nero set fire to Rome he found it convenient to blame the Christians. In the same way Bible believers became a convenient scapegoat for the tragedy of Jonestown.

So also the revisionist historians did another makeover for Harvey Milk. He was a city supervisor in San Francisco and California's first openly gay elected public official. On November 27, 1978, he and Mayor George Moscone were both assassinated. It was made to order for the media to blame homophobia for his murder and make him into a martyr. In reality Flynn insists that Harvey Milk was an evil man who raped teen age boys. At the time of his death Harvey was thirty-three years old and hooking up with a sixteen-year-old boy named Jack McKinley. This was only one of many of young men with whom he was intimate. Instead of exposing him as a pedophile, however, the media made him into a homosexual hero. Each year on May 22nd California students celebrate Harvey Milk Day. He was not killed by a homophobe as revisionists would have you believe. He was killed by his friend, Dan White, who was a former political ally. Milk’s death was the result of a perceived political betrayal, not homophobia.

Dan White also killed Mayor Moscone on the same day and for the same reason. He felt betrayed because he was not reappointed to a position from which he had recently resigned. This unfortunate tragedy, however, solidified the political career of Dianne Feinstein. At the time she was president of the Board of Supervisors, but at the death of Moscone was immediately appointed mayor.

It is sad to see San Francisco abandon truth to promote a radical political agenda. It reminds us of the Biblical indictment of the ancient world recorded in Romans 1:21-32. When they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, God gave them over to a reprobate mind. It seems that San Francisco has also been given over to a reprobate mind. For example, a recent NBC Bay Area Investigation revealed a dangerous mix of drug needles, garbage, and human feces throughout downtown San Francisco. The Investigative Unit surveyed 153 blocks of the city. The more than 20-mile stretch includes popular tourist spots like Union Square and major hotel chains. While apparently accepting as inevitable this exposure to human waste and disease infected needles, the San Francisco supervisors unanimously approved a ban on plastic straws. How’s that for a reprobate mind? Or consider 45 year old Jose Ines Garcia Zarate. He is an illegal alien who has been deported five times. Had he been a citizen the “three strikes law” would have put him in prison indefinitely. As an illegal San Francisco gave him a pass. On July 1, 2015 he killed Kathryn Stenle by shooting her in the back as she was strolling along Pier 14. Incredibly, the career criminal and killer was acquitted. San Francisco, as you know, is a “sanctuary city”. They don’t turn in illegal aliens to the Federal Government. Even more reprobate, KPIX reported that San Francisco recently spent $310,000 to register non-citizens to vote in a school election. Only 49 registered which computes to $6,300 per vote.

No wonder Daniel J. Flynn describes San Francisco as a “Cult City”.
