Dearest grandchild,

I must confess my concern that your experience in college might erode your Christian faith. I fear there are many professors on campus like Bill Ayers who co-founded the infamous Weather Underground. They were a self proclaimed communist revolutionary group that bombed police stations, the U.S. Capitol Building, and even the Pentagon. He never spent a day in jail but became a professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He correctly concluded that he could do more to “fundamentally transform” America as a college professor than as a bomb throwing revolutionary. It was in his home, as you may know, that Barack Obama began his political career. Or consider Prof. Pete Singer of Princeton who argues that newborn babies should not be considered a person until 30 days after birth. He further believes that attending physicians should kill disabled babies on the spot. While not all college professors are this radical, I fear that too many are.

When Roy Weece was working on campus at the University of Missouri in Columbia he felt that many students had their faith “smiled away”. No facts or evidence was necessary, just the prominence of peer pressure and the condescending smirk of a professor. Please follow the evidence and do not allow yourself to be brainwashed or intimidated by academia.

Both believers and non-believers have the same evidence, but not the same world view. The idea that you cannot be a Christian and a scientist at the same time is preposterous. According to 100 Years of Nobel Prizes (2005) from 1901 – 2000 65.4% of all Nobel Prize Laureates identified as Christians. Overall Christians won 78.3% of Peace Prizes, 65.3% in Physics, 62% in Medicine, 54% in Economics, and 49.5% in Literature. As I have mentioned before, the late Dr. Henry Morris in his book Men of Science, Men of God lists over 100 believers who were scientists. Moreover, they were the founders and pioneers in virtually every field of scientific disciplines.

Just recently I became aware of Dr. Jonathan Sarfati who founded the Wellington Christian Apologetics Society of New Zealand. His intellectual ability is demonstrated by the fact that he was once the chess champion of New Zealand and represented his country in three Chess Olympiads. He even battled world champion Borios Spassky to a draw. Even more remarkable is that he has been known to take on 12 different players at the same time while blindfolded. On another occasion he played 30 opponents at the same time and defeated them all. This time, however, he did it without the blindfold. While this does not make Dr Sarfati right concerning his belief in creation, it does, however, demonstrate that he is not an intellectual light weight. To be certain this brilliant scientist is too intelligent to let anyone smile his faith away without evidence.

The Bible teaches that “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God” (Ps. 14:1). The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia lists 8 different Hebrew words all translated as “fool” in the KJV. They are Nabal, Ewil, Kesil, Sakhal, Pethi, Baar, Taphel, and Toholah. Each word, of course, has it’s own unique meaning. The word in our text is “nabal” which means to be “shamelessly immoral”.

The “fool” in our text, therefore, does not have to be an atheist. It can be any “shamelessly immoral” person. The point is that immoral men like Judas Iscariot think they are going to get away with it. They say “in their heart” that there is no God. Immoral women like Jezebel do the same.

The word “nabal” is used in Gen. 34:7 to describe Shechem who raped Dinah. It is used in Deut. 22:21 to describe the woman who would “play the whore in her father’s house”. It is used in Josh. 7:15 to describe Achan who stole a wedge of gold and Babylonian garments from Jericho. It is used in Judges 19:23,24 to describe the sexual perverts who lusted after a Levite and raped his concubine to death. It is used in 2 Sam. 13:12 to describe Ammon who raped Tamar, the sister of Absalom. Each of these “fools” expected to get by with it. They behaved the way they did because they were saying in their heart that that there was no God;

Evolutionists sometimes accuse believers of being lazy. When faced with the complexity of nature we turn to God and they turn to evolution. They are evidently proud of their tortured theories that require billions of years and lead to a labyrinth of confusion. To illustrate the absurdity of their thinking let us suppose that you go outside and find a bunch of rocks arranged to spell a 3 letter word such as Sam, Sue, Pat, or Pam. Is it lazy to assume the obvious? Rather than concoct some elaborate theory why not admit that these 3 letter words came from an intelligent mind? Is it virtuous to deny the obvious and try to explain these words by some random acts of nature over a long period of time? Yet these self appointed arbiters of truth seem proud of the fact that the “believe” the more then 3 billion letters in the human genome happened by accident over billions of years. Whether the word is 3 letters long, or 3 billion letters long, it is not lazy to conclude the obvious.

Please don’t let anyone smile your faith away.
