JESUS, HOWEVER, WAS UNIQUE

MY SON “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?” (Hebrews 1:5 (KJV)

| There is a sense in which Adam was a son of God (Lk. 3:38).

= There is a sense in which the Israelites were the children of God (Deut. 14:1).

= There is a sense in which angels are the sons of God (Job 1:6).

JESUS, HOWEVER, WAS UNIQUE

| God never said “My Son” to the angels or to anybody else but Jesus!

| Jesus is better than the angels and has obtained a more excellent name than they (Heb. 1:4).

| The relation between Jesus and God is unique and special.

= Mary was told that her child would be the Son of God (Lk. 1:35).

a When Jesus was baptized God said “This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3:17).

| All angels and men have a beginning, but Jesus didn’t. He is eternal! (Heb. 7:3).

| Jesus is therefore unique. He is the “Only begotten Son of God” (Jn. 3:16).

While no one else can become the “Son of God” like Jesus, there is an open invitation to everyone to become the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus (Gal. 3:26). This is not just “Good News”, it is the “best news” man will ever hear. Unfortunately, the wicked will do everything he can to keep us from being joint heirs with Jesus. In the year 2,000 Thomas Martinez was a 67 year old homeless man living on the streets of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. When he was approached by the police he assumed they were going to arrest him for his alcohol and drug habits. He fled from the police and disappeared without a trace. The police, however, were not going to arrest him at all. They were trying to tell him that his ex-wife, Ines Gajardo Olivares, had died. Further, they wanted him to know that not only had she forgiven him for leaving her, but she even left him an inheritance of $ 6 million. In spite of publishing his story in the newspapers, the unfortunate soul has never been found.

The sad story of Thomas Martinez, however, pales into insignificance by comparison to the poor deluded souls who run away from Jesus. Jesus did not come into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him (John 3:17). The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. He does not search us out to condemn us, but to offer us an invitation to join the family and receive an eternal inheritance.

Cherl Shotts was a housewife in Indiana. On Aug. 11, 1985 she saw Diane Sawyer do an 18 second interview a little crippled boy in Africa. He was 5'4" but only weighed 65 lbs. She and her husband borrowed money, maxed out their credit cards, and brought that little starving boy to Ameria. He arrived Dec. 7, 1985. His physical condition was so bad that he had to have five surgeries to correct his physical problems. On his first day in the family he hobbled down the stairs and asked for the “rug cleaning machine”. When asked why, he said that he was their new “house boy” and wanted to do a good job. Cheryl explained that he was not her “house boy”, he was her “son”. He replied: “I don’t know what it means to be a son, you will have to teach me”.

Praise God! We are no longer slaves, we are sons. We have not received the spirit of bondage and fear, but the Spirit of sonship that emboldens us to cry out “Abba, Father” (Rom. 8:15). As sons, we are heirs. Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if we suffer with Him that we might also share in His glory. God wants you to be His son, please do not reject Him!
